Influential Leadership and Political Acumen

Having good ideas or strong skills is no longer enough to move projects forward. One must also know how to navigate relational dynamics, understand internal political stakes, and mobilize the right allies at the right time.

Whether it’s about securing resources, improving a process, or championing an innovative idea, influence has become a critical strategic skill.

Training Goals

Acquire practical tools, a better understanding of impact levers, and a clear strategy to act with greater confidence and relevance in the professional environment.

Content (modular across multiple workshops)

Preparatory Work

Reflect on an upcoming influence project (e.g., changing a process, requesting additional resources, aiming for a promotion, seeking support, evolving in role or responsibilities, or “selling” a new idea).

Revisiting the Fundamentals of Organizational Politics

  • Understand and acknowledge influence dynamics.
  • Avoiding the trap of manipulation
  • Explore power dynamics (Thomas-Kilmann model).
  • Strengthen your credibility and visibility within the organization.
  • Identify your preferred approach: task vs. relationship (mini-test).
  • Build and maintain a strategic network.
  • Navigate hidden agendas and diverging interests.
  • Use the “favor bank” as an influence lever.

Building an Influence Strategy

Apply a 6-step method (with practical application):
1. Clarify your intention and objective.
2. Map your political environment.
3. Understand the motivations of the person you want to influence.
4. Choose the right approach (3 approaches and 9 tactics).
5. Develop a realistic action plan.
6. Take action and adjust based on feedback.
